About Your Baby's Skin

Understanding your baby's skin

One of the loveliest things about a newborn baby is the softness of their skin. The problem is that the skin is as delicate as it is soft, making it vulnerable to damage and irritation.

A baby’s skin is really sensitive. In fact it is about 20 to 30 per cent thinner than that of an adult, which means it needs to be handled with tremendous care. Actually, it's even possible to damage a baby's skin just by using a rough towel.

Baby skin care

A baby's skin has a slightly higher surface pH than that of an adult and is extremely delicate – making it extremely sensitive to chemicals. When choosing a baby product, it's a good idea to avoid anything that contains strong detergents or harsh chemicals that could possibly cause irritated skin.

You should look for reliable baby skin care brands and products that have been clinically proven. Ideally it should be soothing, non-perfumed and free from added colours, preservatives or antiseptics.

If you are worried about irritations, diaper rash or possible symptoms of baby eczema, see your GP or healthcare professional.

Bath time

It’s vital to keep your baby clean but many experts advise against bathing every day to avoid drying out the skin. Instead you can just thoroughly wash their face, neck, hands and bottom daily.

When you do bathe your little one, only use products with gentle and mild fragrance-free formulas that are specially developed for delicate skin. Try to avoid using any washing products that contain SLS ( sodium lauryl sulphate that causes foam), lather or foam, especially soaps, bubble baths or shower gels that aren't designed for babies.

It is important that the product provide a nourishing care to baby's fragile skin. Ask a pharmacist or check the ingredients on any products before you buy them.

Treating Diaper Rash with Bepanthen® Ointment

Rinse the affected area with lukewarm water

It's best to use plain water. But if you use soap, be sure to use a mild one, and only after a bowel movement as overusing of soap can disrupt the healing process.

Protect the skin with Bepanthen® Ointment at every change

Bepanthen® Ointment  has a transparent, breathable texture that makes it easy to apply and remove, as well as keeping the skin healthy by allowing it to breathe. Bepanthen® Ointment protects the damaged skin with a protective layer through a purified lanolin compound. Lanolin helps protect skin against drying and seals the moisture needed for skin repair, without preventing air exchanges. This helps optimal healing from diaper rash and is ideal to use at every diaper change. As it also contains  Dexpanthenol ( pro-vitamin B5) , Bepanthen® Ointment accelerates the skin’s own natural regeneration process to gently heal and reinforce its own protective barrier. Formulated according to the needs of delicate infant skin, Bepanthen® Ointment is free from all colourant, fragrances and preservatives.

Choose the right kind of baby wipes

Avoid wipes that contain alcohol or fragrances. If you find that a baby wipe is giving your little one irritated skin, try using plain water with a soft paper towel or cloth wipe until the rash heals.

Expose your baby's skin to the air

Let your baby wear a loose diaper so that the air can circulate. During naps, remove the diaper and lay them on a towel. Allowing the area to dry will reduce the risk of a yeast infection.
