Diaper Care

What you'll need

Before you begin, wash and dry your hands.

Set up a warm, clean, dry area to change your baby's diaper. You can use a changing mat but a towel or clean cloth diaper on any soft surface will work too.

Within reach you’ll need:

  1. Clean diapers
  2. Baby wipes or wet cotton wool
  3. A plastic bag
  4. A protective Baby cream like Bepanthen® Ointment

Removing a dirty diaper

  1. Undo the tabs and fold them back into themselves, but don’t remove the diaper yet.
  2. Use the diaper to wipe away any stool. For boys, cover the penis with a cloth.
  3. Lift your baby by the ankles and fold the dirty diaper in half.
  4. Dispose of the dirty diaper in your plastic bag.
  5. Use a baby wipe or wet cotton wool to thoroughly clean your baby’s front, always moving away from the vagina for a girl.
  6. Lift both of your baby's legs and clean their bottom.

Putting on a new diaper

  1. Apply a protective baby ointment like Bepanthen® Ointment.
  2. Put on a fresh diaper by positioning the top half (the half with tabs) under your baby’s rear. The other half should come up between the legs.
  3. Fasten the diaper at both sides with the tabs, ensuring it's snug, but not pinching the skin.
  4. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific tips.

Things to remember

No two babies are the same so don’t worry if you do something differently.

  • Ammonia in the contents of a diaper can cause irritated skin and diaper rash, so try to change your Baby quickly.
  • Never cover a newborn’s umbilical cord.
  • Try not to bunch the diaper as it can chafe.
  • For a boy, tuck the penis down to keep his urine in the diaper.

Treating Diaper Rash with Bepanthen® Ointment

Rinse the affected area with lukewarm water

It's best to use plain water. But if you use soap, be sure to use a mild one, and only after a bowel movement as overusing of soap can disrupt the healing process.

Protect the skin with Bepanthen® Ointment at every change

Bepanthen® Ointment has a transparent, breathable texture that makes it easy to apply and remove, as well as keeping the skin healthy by allowing it to breathe. Bepanthen® Ointment protects the damaged skin with a protective layer through a purified lanolin compound. Lanolin helps protect skin against drying and seals the moisture needed for skin repair, without preventing air exchanges. This helps optimal healing from diaper rash and is ideal to use at every diaper change. As it also contains  Dexpanthenol ( pro-vitamin B5) , Bepanthen® Ointment accelerates the skin’s own natural regeneration process to gently heal and reinforce its own protective barrier. Formulated according to the needs of delicate infant skin, Bepanthen® Ointment is free from all colourant, fragrances and preservatives.

Choose the right kind of baby wipes

Avoid wipes that contain alcohol or fragrances. If you find that a baby wipe is giving your little one irritated skin, try using plain water with a soft paper towel or cloth wipe until the rash heals.

Expose your baby's skin to the air

Let your baby wear a loose diaper so that the air can circulate. During naps, remove the diaper and lay them on a towel. Allowing the area to dry will reduce the risk of a yeast infection.
